STUDY PERMIT
A Study Permit, also known as a Study Permit, or a Study Permit for short, is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows foreign citizens to study at a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI). International students studying in Canadian schools must apply for a study visa. Studying in Canada for more than 6 months without a study permit is considered a violation of immigration law and will be deported. The duration of the study permit is usually the same as the duration of the program. In Canada, all primary and secondary schools, and public institutions of higher learning are DLIs, which can accept international students and apply for study permits. Some private higher education institutions do not meet the DLI requirements and cannot apply for a study permit. Therefore, when applying for a school, be sure to confirm that the school meets the DLI requirements.
Note that a study permit is different from a visa. Visas are used to help people from non-visa-free countries enter Canada; people from visa-free countries do not need to apply for a visa to enter Canada, but need to apply for an eTA. A study permit is used to help international students stay and study in Canada legally; people from visa-free countries also need to apply for a study permit to study in Canada.
